Food in Ayer Tawar, Perak, Malaysia

Since we are in AYER TAWAR to buy Mee Suah and Biscuit, we might as well visit some good food for breakfast and lunch in the town. We drop in Kedai Kopi NGA for our breakfast.


There is a WAN TAN Mee stall in this Kedai Kopi NGA which is popular among the locals but I still prefer those in Penang.

The big plate of special fresh noodle in soya sauce like the Wan Tan Mee in Penang.

The wanton soup is good. The texture of the wanton skin is very fine.


For lunch we went to Restoran ING HUA where we had the Rice Red Wine Mee Suah which is famous in AYER TAWAR.

Where to find good Mee Suah ( Vermicelli) in Malaysia

Mee Suah ( Vermicelli) is noodle made from rice flour. It is produced in big bulk with each as long as you can imagine. They are sold in kilograms and cost around MR9 per kilo.


You can get the good Mee Suah in this Kedai Runcit Chop MAN LEE along the main road in AYER TAWAR in Perak, Malaysia. You can buy the wet or the dried type.

The shop is located along the main road in AYER TAWAR along the way to Sitiwan or Lumut in Perak, Malaysia.

If you buy the wet type, you have to re-distribute them into small bundles for drying in the sun before keeping them ready to cook.


There are many dishes using Mee Suah especially the Hawker food in Penang. Examples are Duck Drumstick Mee Suah and Rice Red Wine Mee Suah.

Leaving Penang, we took a short trip to Ayer Tawar, a small town on the way to Sitiwan or Lumut in Perak, Malaysia. We visited a small cottage factory producing this special pleated curly biscuit which is not so sweet but crunchy.

The company producing this biscuit is DANG TRADING. The owner is Mr Peter Dang tel no : 012-5184323. You should give him a call to reserve your orders before you drive to the town as he could not produce enough to fufill his orders.

Penang Hawker Food in NEW CATHAY coffee shop in Penang, Malaysia

Kedai Kopi NEW CATHAY is located at the junction of Lorong Kucing and Jalan Burma.


The landmark to look for is this Church "Immaculate Conception" along Jalan Burma. Kedai Kopi NEW CATHAY is located in-front of this Church.


Kedai Kopi NEW CATHAY has many Penang Hawker Food stalls. It is open for breakfast and lunch. There are car parks around but it is difficult to locate one as the place is popular with locals. The food are quite good and it is recommended you give it a go if you are looking for place for breakfast or lunch.

Char Koay Teow is good and comparable with others in the Island.

The Wan Tan Mee is good with generous ingredients. It comes with a bowl of wanton soup.

The Poh Piah is ordinary


The Koay Teow Th'ng (Soup) is quite good in taste and can be considered one of the better Koay Teow Soup I have eaten in the Island. It is highly recommended.

The Sar Hor Fun is good with fresh ingredients. I would recommend it to anyone who likes Sar Hor Fun.

There are so many stalls that serves good Penang Hawker food in one location (coffee shop) that I would recommend that you visit this Kedai Kopi NEW CATHAY if you are in Jalan Burma.

Penang Wan Tan Mee

Kedai Makan Dan Minum POLYCOFFEE GARDEN is in a row of shophouses, located along Jalan Burma after Jalan Cantonment junction on the left side of the road.

You can find the Penang Wan Tan Mee Stall in Poly Coffee Garden Coffee Shop which operates from 7 am to 11 pm.


The Wan Tan Mee is the dry type in black soya sauce. The Wan Tan Mee comes with a separate bowl of wanton soup. The stall serves good wan tan mee as compared with some other stalls that we have tried.

Dumplings Soup

If you happens to be in Pulau Tikus area, drop in the Poly Coffee Garden Coffee Shop and try out the Wan Tan Mee.

Penang Koay Teow Soup

Restoran Hai Oan is located in Jalan Burmah (Burmah Road) near Old Rex Cinema.


The Koay Teow Th'ng (Soup) Stall which is formerly from the Pitt Street, is now located in the Restoran Hai Oan.


Penang Koay Teow Soup


The Koay Teow ( rice noodle) is very thin and narrow. The fish balls are very tasty. The flat meat pieces are specially made which we have not seen anywhere else in Koay Teow Soup. If you like Koay Teow Soup, you should visit the stall and give it a try.

Penang Curry Mee

Kedai Kopi KWAI LOCK is located at the junction of Jalan Burmah (Burmah Road) and Solok Moulmein ( Moulmein Close) infront of Pualu Tikus Police Station.
