There are five entrances (gates) to the city, one for each cardinal point and the victory gate leading to the Royal Palace area. Each gate is crowned with four giant faces. The South Gate is often the first stop on a tour.
On the road from Angkor Wat and Siem Reap, the South Gate is the first entrance to the city we entered. On both sides of the entrance, are two rows of figures each carry the body of the serpent. On the left are the gods and on the right are the demons (asuras.
